The epic movies of actor Christian Bale

Being in front of the camera since the age of 13 has given Bale the edge over his craft

English actor Christian Bale has portrayed only a handful of characters on screen and each with redefined finesse. The actor is known for the versatile physical transformations that he undergoes to play his roles. Bale began his career at the age of 13 with Steven Spielberg's 1987 war film Empire of the Sun and then performed as a leading man. However, his widespread recognition came with his portrayal of serial killer Patrick Bateman in the 200 black comedy, American Psycho, followed by the titular role in the 2004 psychological thriller The Machinist. Here is a list of a few of Christian Bale's films that one must not miss.

Empire Of The Sun

This 1987 coming-of-age war film is based on J. G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical 1984 novel of the same name. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars 13-year-old Christian Bale, besides John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson. Like the book, the film follows a young boy, Jamie "Jim" Graham, played by Bale, whose life transformed from living in a wealthy British family in Shanghai to becoming a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Since the film is shown through the young boy, Bale imbibed his character even as a kid to the core.

3:10 To Yuma

This 2007 Western film stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in the lead roles. The film is the director's remake of the 1957 movie of the same name, which was an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1953 short story. The film set in 1884 revolves around a drought-impoverished rancher and a Civil War veteran, played by Bale, who to provide for the family takes on a dangerous job of bringing in a notorious outlaw, played by Crowe.

Rescue Dawn

This 2006 epic war drama film written and directed by Werner Herzog is based on an adapted screenplay from his 1997 documentary film Little Dieter Needs to Fly. The story is accurate as it is based on German-American pilot Dieter Dengler, who was shot down and captured by villagers sympathetic to the Pathet Lao during an American military campaign in the Vietnam War. And Christian Bale portrays the role of Dengler.

Christian Bale is the recipient of various accolades such as the Academy Award and Golden Globe Awards. A few other Bale's movies are Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, The Prestige, Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Promise, The Fighter, American Hustle, The Big Short, Ford v Ferrari, and Vice.
