The English language is probably the most important thing left by the Britishers.

Though the aim behind the spreading of this language was to create a Babu class who will serve the British raj, this language helps India be unified in the present scenario. Now, it has become a common language throughout the states of India. This expansion did not happen in a single day. So many people and educational acts have contributed to this, and as a result, English has flourished and become the most important language in our personal, academic, and professional lives. This article will discuss some important acts and commissions amongst them.

Charter Act of 1813 is the beginning of this development.

In the year 1813, East India Company's charter came for renewal once again. By this time, missionaries were trying to prepare the ground in England for imparting western education in India, and finally, through this act, English education made its entry and started to flourish in India. As important, some points can be mentioned, such as – the company would undertake all the educational responsibilities and duties of the Indian people, and they will also contribute one lakh rupees each year which was absent prior to 1813. Finally, it can be said that through this act, the company directly took responsibility for the education and management of India.

The next important name is Charles Babington Macaulay.

In 1835 Macaulay submitted his minute, which was famously called Macaulay's Minute. There he clearly said, “a single shelf of a good European library was worth the whole literature of India and Arabia”. Since Macaulay did not have any clear idea of oriental learning or the Eastern languages, he tried to discard the Indian languages and introduced English as the medium of communication. It is Macaulay whose agenda was to educate the higher class of the society so that it can be reached to the masses through the aristocratic class of contemporary India. Neither his knowledge about Indian culture and languages was clear, nor the process of the execution of his plan, still it must be recognized that from this time, the English language was popularized in India in a true sense.

Mr Wood was a bit different from Macaulay

.Mr Wood's opinion regarding oriental learning was different. Wood's Despatch emphasized the importance of oriental languages as well as the usefulness of western language for Indians. He basically tried to focus on the problems of Indians regarding education and took some steps to solve them.

These preliminary steps marked the foundation of the English language among the Indians.
