The Hybrid Technology Of Electric Vehicles

All you need to know about hybrid vehicles and the benefits of having one around you.

When we think of the term hybrid, we usually refer it to as offspring generated from different species of organisms. Bringing it in terms of automobiles can confuse you, but here we are to make things simple. The US department of energy considers hybrid vehicles to be combinations of two or more energy conversion technologies. It could be fuel cells, motors, generators or heat engines.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are almost as same as today's automobile. The only difference being it has two sources of power. Some companies use diesel or gasoline internal combustion ""heat"" engines, while few use electricity-generating microturbines or fuel cells.

In gasoline vehicles, the ICE is designed to work with hill climbing, accelerating etc. the pure battery cars are pollution-free and lack extended range. They require quick recharging and the batteries are heavy. To overcome the obstacles, lighter, cleaner and fuel-efficient hybrid electric vehicles are made as an alternative. They use the electric motor to serve supplemental power source for peak load conditions.

Most production hybrid cars use relatively small gasoline or diesel in concert with batteries. The direct fuel injection is used in diesel-electric transit buses with somewhat smaller engines for lower fuel emissions. A pair of propane-powered microturbines are used to generate power.

There are two basic kinds of HEV configurations. The series hybrid system that uses a small fuel-burning engine to drive the generator for electricity. It, in turn, is sent to one or more electric motors which drive the wheels. The second is a parallel hybrid system with dual power paths, including the electric propulsion system, fuel-burning engine, or wheels' power.

With the hybrid electric cars, the heat engine can be downsized to run at the peak of efficiency. It can be made to propel the vehicle and run the battery charging generator simultaneously. HEV's cut the fuel consumption and emission while minimizing the weight of the car. You won't have to worry about your vehicle's pollution check as it is ideal for environmental care.

The benefits of HEVs are-

  • Provides the torque and power for electrification of full-size SUVs without compromising on the performance.
  • Enables regenerative braking while driving. It also has reduced co2 emissions which makes it perfect to be a city car.
  • Offers unique and highly integrated modular inverter technology with high power and torque density eliminates the need for separate power electronics module.
