The Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country situated in the Eastern Himalayas sharing its border with China to the north and India to the southeast and west, while its neighbours are Nepal and Bangladesh. Constitutionally a monarchy with Vajrayana Buddhism as the state religion, Bhutan has continually been ranked as the happiest country in all of Asia, and the eighth Happiest Country in the world. So for a country with such high standards for happiness and human value, it should be a must visit country for the next travel plan. Taktsang Goemba, also known has Tiger’s Nest This beautiful red and white monastery tucked away on the hilltop - 9480 ft above the ground - is a must for tourists. Well, not an easy place to reach, one has to trek along the rocky winding path to reach Taktsang monastery in Paro. This trek is one of the best adventure activities in Bhutan. The monastery was rebuilt in 1998 after a fire destroyed it. Don’t worry, there is one resting pit called the Taktsang Cafeteria offering delicious vegetarian Bhutanese food.
Buddha Dordenma The Great Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic at 177 ft high statue of Shakyamuni Buddha sitting amidst the ruins of the palace of SherabWangchuk, the thirteenth Druk Desi that overlooks Thimphu - the capital of Bhutan. The statue houses over one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues, each of which, like this giant statue, are made of bronze and gilded in gold. A pilgrimage for locals and attraction for visitors, one can find locals camping behind Buddha who will welcome you with open arms.
Trongsa Dzong If you are someone who loves to explore and gets absorbed in the historical aspects of a place, then Trongsa Dzong is your thing to do. It is the ancestral home of the Royal Family that was built approximately some 463 years ago. Overlooking the Mangde River, make sure you visit its 24 chapels and the museum in the watchtower. It is its street-like corridors, heritage courtyards, and stone stairs that will transport you to the bygone times.
DechenPhrodrang Monastery Situated in Bumthang Valley, DechenPhrodrang is a Buddhist monastery in Thimphu. The literal meaning of which is ‘Palace of Great Bliss’ and standing true to its meaning one can hear hums and assorted recitations coming from the grounds of the monastery. The monastery apart from giving an eight-year study course also contains a number of important historical Bhutanese artifacts including 12th-century paintings monitored by UNESCO and a statue of ShabdrungNgawangNamgyal on the upper floor.
