The oldest Indian classical dances famous worldwide

As rich as the culture, the rich are our Indian dance forms

India’s rich civilization is a hub of traditional and classical art forms. While various artisanal forms have root deep in the Indian heritage, it has a birthplace for a multitude of Indian classical dance forms that were once performed in the courts of kings. Bharatnatyam One of the oldest Indian dance from Tamil Nadu, it was originally a temple dance used to express Hindu religious stories and devotions. Performed on Carnatic music, it is known for its body movements and gestures called the Mudras. The main focus is on the hand gestures, leg movements and facial expressions of the dancer.

Kathak Originating from Uttar Pradesh, this dance form is a primary bastion of Mughal rule that became popular in India. The literal meaning of Kathak refers to Kathakas who were professional storytellers using a mix of dance, song, and drama. This too was a temple dance initially then moving into the courts of ruling houses. This dance holds importance in the nazakat or grace, and etiquettes of a dancer.

Oddisi From Odhisa it was performed in temples to please Lord Jagannath and is known for its style, independent head, chest, and pelvis movements incorporating postures replicating those found in temple sculptures. It is not only very expressive but has over fifty mudras very commonly used.

Kathakali It is said to be one of the hardest dance forms to learn and perform as it involves not only elaborate make-up and costumes but intricate facial expressions. Originating in Kerala it draws inspiration from the Ramayana and Shaiva traditions. Unlike other dance forms, Kathakali is performed by boys and men, including the female roles with elaborate costumes and makeup.

Kuchipudi This Andhra Pradesh dance form is the toughest as it requires one to dance and sing. It is a religious procedure in itself with rituals like sprinkling the holy water, burning the incense sticks to the goddesses. Traditionally the dance was performed only by men but now is predominantly being performed by women. Interestingly, this dance form is performed with violin, flute, and tambura instruments.

Manipuri This too has elaborate costumes and makeup and is known to narrate mythological tales of Radha and Krishna’s romance through dance. From Manipur, this dance form is rhythmic with graceful movements.

Mohiniyattam Another Kerala dance form has drama in the dance that is performed with subtle gestures and footwork. With roots in the Natya Shastra, it is traditionally a solo dance performed by women performed on Carnatic music.

From temples to courts to international stages, these classical dance forms continue to bring glory to the country.
