Things Smart People Never Reveal About Themselves At Work

Carrying yourself around at work professionally is an art and a few people have cracked the code for it.

Building a good professional network by opening up to your colleagues is essential but also tricky. It takes some serious judgment about the things you can reveal to your co-workers. This is because over-sharing in most of the cases does more harm than good. The trick is to build a thin line that one should never really cross at a workplace because once you share more than required there’s not going back from there. Here are a few things smart people never reveal at work.

Thoughts on a Colleague’s Incompetency

It is inevitable to come across incompetent people at workplaces. In fact, most of your colleagues already know who they are. However, discussing about a fellow co-workers incompetency is a strict negative. If you cannot help that certain colleague you have no reason to talk about their incompetency. Commenting on a co-worker’s incompetency paints you in a negative light and is a sign of insecurity.

Disliking Their Job

Nobody in your workplace wants to hear you complaining about the job. This marks you as a person with negative personality and someone who cannot work as a team. Moreover, chances are that it would pull down the spirit and morale of the rest of your team members as well. It is easy to spot negative people at a work place bringing the morale of the place down and even easier to replace them with people willing to do the job.

Personal Beliefs

The workplace is a strictly professional space away from people’s personal beliefs regarding religion or politics. Religious and political beliefs are too close to one’s identity and it’s the best not to reveal these beliefs at the workplace. It may give rise to conflict and if you are too headstrong about your beliefs it might end up in you being alienated by people who don’t share your views.

Salary

Honestly, nobody from your workplace cares about knowing how much money you make every month. Sharing your salary details with your coworkers will only result in breeding a negative atmosphere. In most cases, salary allocation is not equal and fair. Revealing your salary with your co-workers bring theirs into direct comparison with yours. This might create tension among co-workers and might raise conflict.
