To Climb Or Not To Climb: Survival Tips For Climbing Mount Everest

Mountains can be unforgiving but that should not stop you from taking up a challenge!

You have decided to take on your fear and climb up the majestic Mount Everest. You are thinking, “How hard could it be? So many people do that every year!” Well, believe it or not it’s not a cakewalk. While it’s praiseworthy that you are being positive and brave about it, it’s also important to be smart about it while you push yourself for the climb. Here are some tips that would help you survive and push through every obstacle that could fall your way on the climb.

Take Note Of The Weather

The weather plays a huge role on any mountain climbing quest. One moment it’s bright and sunny, the next moment there’s a freezing blizzard. Don’t underestimate the weather and take extra care when it comes to it. Keep up with weather forecasts and take them seriously. Do not force yourself into a false sense of security as it will not do you any good. That being said, the drastic changes in the weather on the mountain can also be unexpected. Always keep yourself prepared with fixed ropes anywhere possible. Keep your compass and security light handy for when you decide to set up camp.

Use The Ropes

We know it’s an adventure and at times you might feel like winging it with the risk factors just because you need to feel the adrenaline rush, but don’t. Don’t be foolish and use as many rope clippings as possible. You can never have enough of them. Make sure that the rope you are using is new and check on the screws before you clip. Moreover, do not lean too much on the ropes and use your legs and crampons for the steep climbs.

Know Your Resources

Your resources will be the only things you depend on during your climb. It’s important that you have a strong and fair idea about the oxygen, the alpine medicine and the gear you’d be using. Keep track of our needs and prepare for backups in case any of your resources fail you. As yourself questions like how much oxygen would you need for your attempt. How many bottle swould cover that? What should be the flow rate? What backup do you have in case the oxygen cylinder fails? Prepare for anything in your way and you’d be sorted.
