Top 10 Peacock Breeds You Have Never Seen

These rare breeds of peacocks are so mesmerizing to reckon.

 

Scintillating plumage, slender neck, and graceful gait automatically make peacocks an attractive proposition. Then there are some rare breeds that make them more wannabe then others.

 

Green Peacock

 

Almost similar to the Indian Blue Peafowl, eighty percent of this breed's body colour is green with speckles of gold and their wings are black with sheen of blue. Both genders, who are similar, have longer upper tail coverts hiding the actual tail below.

 

Previously common throughout most of Asia, it is now primarily found in Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

 

Wild Palawan Peacock

 

Found only in the Palawan islands, Philippines, these are the smallest-sized breed. Iridescent electric blue-violet, metallic green and turquoise paint their dorsal plumage, and they sprout grey feathery moustache. They are featured prominently in the indigenous Palawan culture, and in the Puerto Princesa official seal. Shy in nature, they can live up to 15 years.

 

White and Blue Peacock

 

Named after their coat colours — white necks and white & green wings, they are quite rare. Likewise, the red and white peacocks are equally rare and amazing.

 

Great Argus Pheasant

 

Also known as golden Peacock owing to their golden plumage, the wingspan of the males is longer and larger than their females. They fan their shimmering feathers out in the front – the only peacock breed to do so – to protect their female counterparts if they sense she's in danger and when they need to attract them.

 

White Peacock

 

Extremely rare, they are actually blue Indian peacocks who are born as white, due to a rare genetic mutation and not due to albinism. They have blue eyes and are found mainly in India.

 

Asia Peacock

 

Often considered the most beautiful bird in the world, these birds, available mostly in India, primary has blue feathers. They can grow up to 100 to 127 meters and weigh about six to eight kilograms.

Their tail is also the longest among all the breeds. The real beauty of the National bird of India lies when they completely open up their feathers to a dazzling display.

Though grey is the predominant colour, other colours remain hidden underneath their plumage.
