The trend of sequels in Bollywood is not a new one as it was prominent for almost the last two decades. In India, sequels are mostly made to cash on the success of a movie and most of them have nothing to do with the prequels apart from creating a brand. But few movies were true successors to their prequels and taking the movie forwards and some like LageRahoMunnabhai has the same main characters and place them in a new setting. Here we will discuss about a few top Bollywood movies and their equally successful sequels.
Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish
Koi Mil Gaya is a 2003 sci-fi movie starring HrithikRoshan and PreityZinta. The story moves forward in Krrish released in 2007.
Koi Mil Gaya was a blockbuster movie released in 2003 where HrithikRoshan plays a mentally challenged boy Rohit with a grown-up body but brain of an eight years old kid. He meets an alien Jadoo who cures him and also gives him some extra powers. The movie had a sequel in Krrish where the son of Rohit, Krishna again played by HrithikRoshan who gets superpowers hereditary and dons the character of a superhero Krrish. Just like Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish was also a big hit. The third part of the series, Krrish 3 was released in 2013.
Through Munnabhai MBBS, director RajkumarHirani makes a social commentary about the medical profession which became less of something humane and more of a mere job. Sanjay Dutt as Munnabhai and ArshadWarsi as Circuit were incredible in the movie. Its sequel LageRahoMunnabhai tried to show us the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi and his message of non-violence in an entertaining way. Both the movies were successful at the box office along with being critically acclaimed.
FarhanAkhtar remade the Amitabh Bachchan cult classic Don in 2005 but with a twisted climax. The audience loved the new Don and FarhanAkhtar made its sequel Don 2 where the character of Don played by Shahrukh Khan comes back from a hiatus to rule the underworld. The great story, brilliant performances, and cool action sequences made both the movie quite successful.
