However, nobody can deny the fact that texts provide a different vibe that one can never obtain from the modern-day gadgets. Talking about textbooks, if you are a bibliophile or if you are planning to visit Thailand in the months to come; we have compiled a list of some splendid books composed on the Asian country which is also called the land of white elephants.

The Bridge Over the River Kwai- Written by Pierre Boulle, the book was originally published in 1942 and the novel revolves around the lives of prisoners of war during World War II, when the Japanese forces forced them to build up a bridge for the railway project. The project was meant to support the Japanese forces reach Burma from Thailand. If you are planning to visit Thailand soon, reach the city of Kanchanaburi, where the bridge is still intact.

The Beach- The Beach was written by Alexander Garland in 2005 and is a fictional thriller book set in the country of Thailand and later on, it was turned into a movie starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The story takes the reader into the life of Richard, who is a British backpacker spending his first night in a cheap motel in Thailand. Suddenly, the man in the next room commits suicide, but the man provides Richard a map to a secret lagoon before taking his last breath.

Touch the Dragon: A Thai Journal- Written by Canadian writer Karen Connelly, the novel received the Governor General’s Award in 1993 and the New York Times Notable Travel Book of the Year in 2000. Karen spent over a year in a northern village of Thailand and her work enables a reader to run through intricate details Karen observed while staying with the families which covers their lifestyle, education system and the Buddhist rituals followed by them.

Sightseeing- In our list, this is the sole novel penned by a Thai national. The book is composed by Rattawut Lapcharoensap, which comprises numerous short stories set in the present-day Thailand. The stories take a reader through various aspects of Thailand ranging from the massive tourism industry to the societal problems that exist in the country to date. Publishers Weekly commented on the book saying, “The Thailand of Westerners’ dreams shares space with a Thailand plagued by social and economic inequality in this auspicious debut collection of seven plaintive and luminous.”
