Top Football Clubs in Thailand

As per a recent report, football is now the most popular sport in Thailand. Introduced in 1897, it's played all around the country, be it streets, school grounds, or stadiums. Now, owing to the rise of the Thai league, the entire scenario has only gotten better over the past decade. There are some professional football clubs, many of which have gained a reputation internationally as well. So, without further ado, let's have a look at the three best ones among them.

Buriram United, founded in 1970

Previously known as Provincial Electricity Authority, Buriram United is the most successful football club in Thailand. Over the last decade, this club has achieved a lot more than any other football club in entire Southeast Asia. They won their first Thai League 1 title in 2008. In 2011, they became the first club in Thailand to win all the domestic trophies. Their home stadium is Chang Arena, having a seating capacity of 32,600. Some of the star players here are Pansa Hemviboon, Sasalak Haiprakhon, Siwarak Tedsungnoen, and others.

Muangthong United, founded in 1989

Based in Muang Thong Thani, Muangthong United Football Club won the Thai Division 1 League title in 2008. Previously known as Norgjorg Pittayanusorn School Football Team, this club was founded in 1989 by Worawi Makudi (who served as the Football Association of Thailand's General Secretary from 1996 to 2007). Their home stadium is Thunderdome Stadium, which can hold as many as 15,000 people at a time. Also, they have an in-house academy that is dedicated to encouraging and providing training to budding footballers.

Chonburi F.C., founded in 1997

Chonburi F.C. has been participating in the Thai football league system since 2002. Nicknamed as The Sharks, they won the Provincial League title in 2005, by defeating Nakhon Ratchasima at the Central stadium. Also, they became the champion of the 2007 Thailand Premier League and went on to become one of the most powerful teams in the country. They have Sriracha (also based in Chonburi Province) as their main rivals, and the two have competed in several tournaments in the last few years. They have a football academy as well, that provides training to young talents from all around the country.
