Top Horror Movies of Indian Cinema

Hold your seat tight while watching these.

People love to get scared. And that’s why the craze for horror stories and horror movies is at a different level. Indian audiences have always loved horror movies very much.

Though, most of the attempts to make horror movies have failed to shiver the audience. This is due to the limitations of skills in various elements of Cinema such as light-sound and technology. But in the midst of all this, some talented filmmakers have made some awesome horror movies and put awesome sound patterns in them.

Let’s know a little about some of those excellent artworks.

Mahal 1949

One of the most notable horror movies of the early days of Indian Cinema is Kamal Amrohi's Mahal which was released in 1949. Legendary actors like Ashok Kumar, Madhubala, M. Kumar, Vijayalakshmi played the lead characters in the film. In the film, a lawyer at a young age gets engaged with a paranormal woman.

Bees Saal Baad

An amazing film by Biren Nag compared to the the-then situation of Indian Cinema. Writer Dhruva Chatterjee created paranoia around a family and constructed the suspense of the story very well. Biswajit Chatterjee, Waheeda Rehman, Manmohan Krishna, Madan Puri, Sajjan, and Om Kishan played the lead roles in the film. The film was released in 1962.

Ek Thi Daayan

It is a social movie with a horror form of presentation. This was a new type of attempt by Kannan Iyer. The story and screenplay were written by Mukul Sharma and the dialogues were written by Vishal Bhardwaj.

Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin, Huma Qureshi, Pawan Malhotra, Rajatabha Dutta, Visshesh Tiwari, Sara Arjun- a number of quality artists from Bollywood were cast in this film. It was released in 2013.

The House Next Door (2017)

This is a Telugu Horror Film by Milind Rau. It’s also a social movie with a horror outlook. Prakash Belawadi, Khushi Hajare, Andrea Jeremiah, Atul Kulkarni, Avinash Raghudevan, Siddharth, Suresh, Anisha Victor, and Manav Vij were seen in this film. This film was released in 2017 and is available on Netflix in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi language.

Tumbbad (2018)

A completely different kind of horror film where gods have been used as the main horror element. The  story of the film revolves around a temple. The film was directed by Rahi Anil Varve and Adesh Prasad. Anand Gandhi was the creative director of the film. The film was released in 2018. It is an exceptional artwork of Indian Cinema.
