For a long period since its beginning, Indian Cinema was mostly detached from the dark genres. It was so until the '90s. Changes in the economy, social structure, and family equations from the 90s have brought so many changes in the forms of art and literature. Nevertheless, psychological thrillers came to the mainstream. Indian audiences and directors felt the desire to nourish the psychological thriller genre.

Ugly

A film by Anurag Kashyap tells a story of a psychic mother whose 10 years old daughter disappears and her ex-husband and present husband trying to find the girl. The girl is the child of her ex-husband. The psyche of the mother and the desire of her ex and present husband to prove themselves better than each other creates the delusion about the story behind their daughter’s disappearance.

This neo-noir psychological thriller was released in 2014.

13B: Fear has a new address

A psychological thriller with a paranormal storyline written and directed by Vikram K. Kumar. In the film, a family gets shifted to a new apartment and there they face so many supernatural incidents. There comes a serial only on their TV and everything starts happening with the family according to the TV serial. But, there comes a twist at the end.

The leads are played by R. Madhavan, Nitu Chandra, and Punaam Dhillon. The film received Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards for Best Cinematographer in 2010 and Vijay Awards for best editor in the same year.

404: Error Not Found

This thriller was directed by Prawaal Raman and was released in 2011. In the movie, a guy comes to a hostel and after facing huge ragging, he starts living in room number 404. After a few days, he starts hallucinating. Later he comes to know that someone who attempted suicide in that room used to live there before him.

Rajvvir Aroraa, Imaaduddin Shah, Nishikant Kamat, Ruchir Raj, Ritika Silas, Tisca Chopra, Sara Arjun and many other actors played crucial roles in the film.

Talvar

The film on the Aarushi Talwar murder case, directed by Meghna Gulzar was a completely new form of film in the history of Indian Cinema. 14 years old girl Shruti and her caretaker Khempal get murdered and the suspicion is indicated toward her parents. This was a completely new type of film where there was the use of Trivia. The film was released in 2015.
