Nothing can surpass the enjoyment one can get from travelling, right? The feel of booking the tickets, packing your bags and landing in a different place is a feeling that one cannot describe in words. Be it road-trips or going to a foreign land, the thrill of exploring new places surely is something great. But, often for various reasons it is not feasible to go on a trip physically. That is when the world of cinema comes to our rescue. A travel documentary is capable of virtually transporting us to places where we can’t easily reach. So, here’s a list of travel documentaries on India that you wouldn’t want to miss…

  1. Way Back Home (2016) – How can a travel article start without the mention of the Himalayas? Way Back Home, a travelogue series, is hosted by Rohan Thakur and produced by the Shoelace Film. The movie explores the beautiful landscapes of the Himalayas and the locals who see several tourists every year. If you want to know more about the lesser known places in the valley, watch this surely!
  2. Hit the Road (2013) – What describes India better than an auto rickshaw? This documentary sees Ric Gazarian and Keith King, who goes on a 12-day-long auto rickshaw rally from Mumbai to Chennai. They travel around 1300 kilometres braving the extreme weather and take their audience on a wonderful experience.
  3. Riding Solo to the Top of the World (2006) – This over one-hour documentary didn’t have a huge crew nor famous anchors. It’s about a boy, his bike and a camera. Filmed by Gaurav Jani, this documentary follows his journey from Mumbai to Changthang Plateau in Ladakh. It even won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film.
  4. A Maze of Lanes (2002) – If you have yet to visit Varanasi, this documentary should be on your must-watch list. Although it is a short documentary, the visuals are absolutely stunning. Also known as Mauj Masti, Kalpana Subramanian manages to show the city in a way that many haven’t been able to. While she walks and talks through the lanes of Varanasi, you almost feel like you are present there. Hard to believe it was shot in just one day!
There are of course several other documentaries you can watch and get the inspiration to pack your bags and start your beautiful journey.
