Underrated Bollywood music directors who deserve more recognition

Despite of being incredibly talented, these Bollywood music directors haven't yet gained enough appreciations that they truly deserve.

Music is the soul of a film and in Bollywood; songs play a pivotal role in the narrative. We love Bollywood music so much that even before a movie gets released, the songs often become superhit and make a place in our playlist. Bollywood is blessed with a lot of talented music directors who have been ruling our hearts for years, but unfortunately there are some who despite of giving many hits, yet to gain proper recognition and fame.

  1. Vishal Bhardwaj: Vishal Bhardwaj is best known as an exceptional filmmaker, but many aren't aware that he is also a brilliant music director. He started his career as a music composer in the 1995 film 'Abhay', but it was the film 'Maachis' in 1996, which brought him into some limelight. He has composed music in several films (including his own movies like 'Maqbool', 'Omkara', 'Kaminey', 'Haider' etc) and won national awards three times as a music director.
  2. Sanjay Leela Bhansali: You may find people who hate his movies, but you can't really find anyone who doesn't like the music and songs in his movies. Be it 'Tera Zikr Hai' in 'Guzaarish' or 'Laal Ishq' in 'Ram Leela', 'Aj Ibadat' in 'Bajirao Mastani' or 'Ek Dil' in 'Padmavaat', Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a gem of a music director but unfortunately, extremely underrated.
  3. Ismail Darbar: It's quite surprising that a music director like Ismail Darbar falls under the category of 'underrated'. He made his debut with Bhansali's 1999 film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and impressed everyone with his melodious composition. He also composed in movies like 'Devdas, 'Khamoshi - The Musical' and others but unfortunately, ended up being unnoticed.
  4. Viju Shah: Songs like "Saat Samundar Paar", "Tip Tip Barsa Pani", "Aankh Mare" or "Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast" are so popular that they are still considered among the best party songs of Bollywood. People love those songs without knowing the name of the composer. Yes, Viju Shah who mostly worked with filmmaker Rajiv Rai and gave some of the biggest hit songs of Bollywood is still underrated.
  5. Mithoon: Without a single doubt, Mithoon is one of the finest music directors ever in this country but due to some strange reasons, he has never got his due recognition. He has composed several hit and classic songs in movies like 'Zeher', 'The Train', 'Anwar', 'Bas Ek Pal', 'Murder 2', 'Ashiqui 2' etc and the songs still mesmerize us whenever we listen to them. However, it's been some time that he has completely disappeared from Bollywood.
Also Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalker, Ram Sampath, Vanraj Bhatia, Ajay-Atool are some of the most underrated music directors of Bollywood.
