When Steve Waugh was dropped for twin Mark's Oz debut

Twins Steve and Mark Waugh are among the most respected names not only in Australian cricket but in world cricket as well. The story of Mark's debut is an amusing one.

Steve Waugh was a dogged batsman but it was his leadership quality which stood out throughout his career. Waugh led the Australian team in its era of dominance with the 1999 World Cup triumph being the peak of his captaincy.

His captaincy record in test cricket is even more extraordinary with 71.92 percent success rate in red-ball cricket, even ahead of Ricky Ponting's win percentage of over 60. Waugh captained Australia in 57 tests and won 41 of these clashes. What stood out was Australia's 16 consecutive test wins under his leadership.

His twin brother Mark was arguably a better batsman than him. Born about four minutes before Mark, Steve became the elder brother while Mark got the nickname Junior.

The Waugh twins played both cricket and football with the same gusto as children. Cricket has seen a few pairs of twins, but the Waughs became the first pair to play test cricket. The only other pair to play test cricket are New Zealand's Hamish and James Marshall.

Steve's debut came on the Boxing Day Test in 1985 against India while Mark played his first test in 1991 against England at the Adelaide Oval, replacing his twin brother! Yes, in the 1990-91 Ashes Down Under, Steve was dropped from the test team to make room for Mark.

The younger Waugh celebrated the occasion by striking a ton on debut. Waugh returned to the test team in 1991 and cemented his place.

The same year, the Waugh brothers became the first pair of twins to play together in a test match at the international level. The duo registered the feat against West Indies at Trinidad.

The Waugh twins bowed out together at all levels of cricket. The brothers played their last One-Day International (ODI), First-Class game and List A game together. Both were left out of the team after the tri-series Down Under in 2002, where they played their last ODI against the Proteas. Their last First-Class game came when New South Wales played against Queensland in 2004.

Steve's son, Austin Waugh, is taking the family's tradition forward and found a place in the 2018 Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand. Like Steve, Austin is also an all-rounder.
