Throughout the history of the automobile industry, cars with manual transmission have been standard. With age, new technology was invented for hassle-free transmission, which as we recognize now is called an AMT or automatic transmission. However, nobody expected that AMT’s would replace the manual transmission cars to a sizable extent, which is the scenario in today’s world. As per a data shared by Edmunds, United States had 37 per cent of new car designs with manual transmission back in 2011. In 2020, the percentage dipped to 13 per cent as only 41 new car models out of 327 were launched with manual transmission settings.
So, what drives people to choose automatic transmission over manual transmission?

Drivers from the preceding times were all about manual transmission, and even today, the old-gen drivers go for the manual transmission cars. For them, it is all about feeling attached to their vehicles. From holding the transmission stick to pressing the clutch, it’s a sentimental relation that has not dimmed over time. That’s not all, as the manual transmission possesses certain pros.
As mentioned, manual transmission creates a connection with the motorist and therefore, it is more entertaining to drive an MT car. It also grants the driver to switch the gears as per his or her driving sense and requirement, which is imperative when a driver is pushing through a rough trail or climbing up a hill. Not to forget, the maintenance cost of an MT car is cheaper.
Automatic Transmission
While the old-gen prefer cars with manual transmission, the new-gen is more tilted towards the automatic transmission. The reason being that it is easier to learn to drive an automatic transmission car compared to a manual transmission. Furthermore, a driver in an automatic transmission car does not have to continuously toggle across gears and can relax in crowded areas without having to worry much about the clutch. Not to forget, the cars with automatic transmission offer a better mileage, which is a crucial requirement for any driver.
Electric Vehicles
An automatic transmission is not the mere choice in the world today, as electric vehicles are the contemporary love of many. As known, electric cars also yield a hassle-free driving experience akin to the automatic transmission cars.
Although manual transmission cars are unlikely to disappear from the face of the earth, they are fading slowly because of the above-reported reasons.
