Why camera shoulder rig is an important shooting device

A camera shoulder rig is a device that enhances tje stability and reduces the risk of jerk in a shot. This equipment is designed to provide some relief to the filmmakers while filming a tracking shot without a dolly.

A camera shoulder rig is a device made by assembling small objects that allows better handling and is used for stability in the shots. It is an attachment which can be easily attached to the camera and is used by putting it on the shoulder. It can be made at home through DIY by using things such as bricks, a large bag or a flour bag but for a professional filmmaker, it is recommended to use a high quality equipment. One of the major advantages of having shoulder rig is that it helps in taking various kinds of shots.

Shots possible due to rig

Whip Pan - It is a type of shot in which camera pans rapidly in a horizontal manner from either left to right or right to left. It happens so rapidly that it blurs the entire space in between the movement. It is used when the filmmaker wants to focus on two different points instead of the entire space. The shot is used in films like La La Land and has become easier in current times because of the shoulder rig.

Tracking or foot tracking

Shoulder rig enable a person to take a better tracking shot than a hand held camera shot. It is because cameras are lighter in weight and there always remain a chance of jerk in the shot. Shoulder rig not only increases the weight to provide stability, it provides better grip too. Regarding the weight, one can also distribute it evenly if it feels too much.

Advantages of Camera Rig

Stability - One of the main reasons why filmmakers use camera rig is that it provides stability. Shooting is a difficult process, especially if you are shooting outdoors on an uneven terrain. No matter how brilliant you are, the shake will be there in the frame if you try to use a handheld camera for a tracking shot. The rig removes this problem by providing you a stable shot.

Better grip - Some people are proficient in using camera while others aren't. If you are a newbie who does not have much experience in handling camera for a long period of time, it is ideal to use a rig. A rig, especially shoulder rig provides better grip and allows the person to hold it for a long duration.
