Why do we love watching the same film over and over again?

We simply keep revisiting the same films over and over again.

But why? Let's find that out!

There's an endless option when it comes to entertainment these days. But still, we sometimes prefer revisiting the same film over and over again, instead of watching a new one.

There are even lists like "The Most Watched Films of All Time" which include 'Titanic', 'Star Wars', 'Back to the Future', 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’, and more.

Here comes the question - why, even after watching a film 100 times, do we still opt for watching it for the 101st time, and then again? In this article, we'll discuss and try to find out all the aspects of this matter.

There's a nostalgia factor

The most significant factor is that when we revisit a film, the entire experience makes us extremely nostalgic for our old times. For instance, when we watch 'Harry Potter', we feel like going back to our high school again. We remember the past, and also all the memories which are linked to enjoying that particular film. This surely has a soothing effect on our minds, which we just love to have again and again.

It reaffirms that there's order in the world

Re-watching the same film is therapeutic for some people. When we experience the same incident a number of times on screen, this makes us believe that the world is functioning in order. Being aware of the film's outcome prior, we do feel a sense of safety on a primary level.

We know everything beforehand

When we revisit a film, we know everything about the story, characters, and more beforehand.

While it may seem a waste of time to some people, this provides us with a certain sense of satisfaction. We already know what exactly is going to happen next. We know prior that the hero will win or not, and the fate of the bad guys in the end.

We also know that the film is not going to be disappointing. The fact that we are sure about the experience beforehand, makes us calm and comfortable throughout the runtime.

Psychologists think that a certain sense of power comes with this lack of surprise while revisiting a film. We, subconsciously, also feel that the characters are following only our commands in the film.
