Why Expectation Turns out Better Than The Reality

What are expectations but just wish fulfillment? And a reality-check can be brutal!

Hope for the best, and why not? But we tend to imagine an ideal turn out of the future building upon our expectations. We create an experience we wish to be a part of, an event we want to witness, exciting people coloring our lives, we want it all to be perfect. But that seldom comes out to be true. This hope and despair cycle can throw one into disillusionment and here comes the depression. We cannot allow ourselves to be subjected to such disillusionment. But how to identify when we are idealizing a situation? How to find the reasons we create such futile expectation.

Reason for expectation

The constant grind of life needs hope and in search of hope we create such gigantic expectations that the reality can never fulfill. We expect things to turn out our way. We expect people to behave the way we want them to behave, we want the society to perform the way best suits us and our interests. A system cannot work that way. It cannot only serve us. Hence we fall into the loop of not getting our expectations met. We have to understand we cannot make things happen the way we want, none of us have that kind of control over reality! And it surely can be brutal.

Brutality of reality

Many of the times we imagine a place to be something that has no relation to the actual place, it’s our imagination solely that colors our expectation of the place and to be honest, reality owes nothing to that kind of expectation. Reality has it’s own priorities. The material reality of the world, the conditions that affect it into existence, that have nuances way beyond the reach of our imaginations and that can turn out to be brutal.

Tactics to come back from disillusionment

How do we get out of such disillusionment then? Well, we have to be careful while expecting something from our surrounding, from an upcoming experience, from our future and from ourselves. A reality check is always necessary. We have to understand that our expectations has to be based on real possibilities that we have identified with having our feet firmly set on the ground. We have to plan for the future, make detailed action plans and we have to go through a rigorous phase of researching the possibilities before we set our expectation. Let’s make expectations real!
