Why should Navarasa need to be taught?

“A system of acting methodology for actors and dancers”

-G Venu

If you are a performer, then you need to get hold of different emotions. Emotions help you to connect with the audience. The crisis of any character can be communicated with the help of emotions. 'Navarasa' is nothing but the nine emotions that a person mostly emotes for expressing his mood or mental state against different circumstances. The word "Navarasa" is first used in the "Natyasastra" the book that is written by Bharat Muni in 2000 BCE. The book consists of different practices of actors and performers in Ancient India. Even from that time, every performer needs to know about the nine emotions that he or she can express.

What is Navarasa?

Navarasa is nothing but the nine sentiments that one person can have. The Nine rasas are Hasya, Karuna,Rudra, advuta,Bibhatsa,Bhayanaka ,Veera, sringara and the ninth one is the Santa rasa. The final one is added later. Santa rasa refers to a state of tranquillity. The sentiments such as comic, pathetic, furious, marvellous, odious, terrible,, heroic and erotic are mostly practised by the performers. As a performing arts practitioner, these emotions are mandatory to learn.

Aesthetical experience of emotions!

If you are a dancer then you have to take good care of the aesthetics of your performance. The aesthetics of any dance performance is mostly dependent on the postures and facial expressions. If a dancer does not go through a systematic practice of the Navarasa then he or she cannot perform different emotions supporting the music or the act. As a performer, you have to stay real in your performance and also you need to be convincing as well. Primarily you need to emote convincingly at first. To approach the mood of any character you need to go through Navarasa.

The first step of acting a scene!

if you are an actor either on stage or in a film you have to know about all the sentiments a person can use for expressing the different states of mind. The characterisation is very essential to make any character convincing but you need to know how the character is reacting to a certain situation in any act so to react appropriately you need to express one of the emotions either anger or love or disgust or else.

Not just only the actors even a common man can also learn about the nine emotions as these can help to analyse their inner self. Control over different emotions is needed for a person in this fast life so that one can handle things appropriately.
