Why You Must Watch the New Amsterdam; An Engrossing Medical Drama on Netflix

Are you looking for a new engrossing show to binge-watch? If you find yourself agreeing with this, then one of the new additions on Netflix that you could try out is New Amsterdam, a medical drama created by David Schulner. Though Netflix is yet to upload on its platform the latter three seasons, the first two are up on Netflix. Here are some of the reasons why you must try it!

  1. An understanding that everyone deserves healthcare- The show revolves around one of the biggest public hospitals in America, New Amsterdam, and the day-to-day functioning of the hospital, and the personal and professional life of its staff. The most amazing thing about the show is not only is it very well made but there is a certain sensitivity that everyone deserves medical care. The constant repetition of the line “ We Treat everyone here” is apt for the show. It shows people from different social backgrounds, racial minorities, immigrants, economically weaker people, and homeless people who all come there to be treated. Each case is unique, involves a social narrative, and overall, gives us a picture of society at large and the problems within it.
  2. Gripping Cases- Some people come with all kinds of medical problems, sometimes psychological, sometimes those which require risky surgeries. They are often unique, strange cases that aren’t easy to diagnose. But this makes the show all the more interesting, as it provides very engrossing plotlines.
  3. Lovely Acting- The main actors in this show, especially the doctors of the hospital are all brilliant actors. Starting with Ryan Eggold as Max Goodwin who is the lead- a dynamic and radical medical director of the hospital  and the other staff, Jocko Sims as Dr. Reynolds, Freema Ageyman as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Tyler Labine as Dr. Iggy From and Anupam Kher as Vijay Kapoor, each of them has a complicated character and they play their roles marvelously!
  4. Idea of changing the system- A very central issue, that is depicted with immense brilliance in this show is the constant conflict, is the patient more important, or is money more important? Since it is a public hospital, there is constant pressure of fund cuts and the reluctance to spend more money on patients. However, all these doctors with Max Goodwin at the helm are constantly challenging and fighting this pressure and trying to get the best care for their patients. It is very heartwarming!
So when are you going to watch it?
