It’s natural to feel challenged by juggling your job life, being the best partner and running a to-do list.

It's natural to feel challenged by combining doing your best work and being the best partner with your crowded schedule and rushing to-do list. It may even feel impossible on very hectic days. But here’s the truth: It is feasible to manage a career you enjoy while also maintaining the love in your relationship. You might just have to put forth some effort. Here are some helpful tips to tackle your both work life and relationship.

Talk it out

One of your first steps should be to sit down with yourself and your spouse and have an open, true and honest chat. Self-reflection will ensure that you and others are on the same page. Behaviour that appears acceptable to one of you may cause unnecessary stress, anxiety or resentment in the other. You and your spouse must remember that, no matter how close you are, your partner cannot read your mind. They may not realise there is a problem unless you interact with them.

Speak up about your common goals

We are all motivated by different things. Some people find fulfilment outside of their employment, while others are driven by their careers. Although there is no right or wrong way to be, it might be good to have a clear grasp of what motivates each of you in the long term. It’s fine if your core values differ from your partners.

Draw healthy boundaries

To achieve a balance between job and personal life, proper limits are required. You can communicate to your partner about the boundaries you need, such as an extra hour of sleep or going out late for a meeting, without feeling bad. You can set boundaries together, such as no cell phones at supper or in bed.

Check to see how your partner is doing

When work is hectic, time seems to fly by. Take a step back and assess your partner's emotional state. What kind of mood are they in? Do they feel seen or supported by you? Discuss how you two can feel more connected.

Plan a date night

Dedicating one night a week that you and your partner both recognise as your date night will help you organise your other days of the week. It also provides you and your partner something to look forward to no matter how hectic your calendar becomes.

Try to gently remind yourself that you can accomplish what you want and be with the people you want if you strike a balance.
