Just like how India is deep-rooted in its culture and tradition, it is also attached to its sports. While the game hockey is the national sport, cricket is a religion in India. Over time the new generation has started to take up sports more seriously and has ventured into different kinds of them. And in the past few years, India has also been host the Olympics and marathons, and hosted many esteemed international guests. This has led to the building of some of the biggest and largest stadiums in India in terms of capacity. Read on to find out some of them.
Narendra Modi Stadium or Motera Stadium
With a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators, formerly known as SardarVallabhbhai Patel Cricket Stadium is the largest stadium in the world. Located inside the SardarVallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Ahmedabad, the stadium is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association. The stadium is the usual venue for Test, ODI, T20I, and Indian Premier League cricket matches. The original stadium was constructed in 1983, renovated in 2006, and later underwent a major renovation after 2015.As of 2022, the stadium has hosted 14 Tests, 27 ODIs, 6 T20I matches, and 2 IPL matches.
Eden Gardens
This historical cricket ground situated in Kolkata was established in 1864. It is the oldest and second-largest cricket stadium in India. Not only that, it is the third-largest in the world with a current capacity of 68,000. This stadium has many names given to it for its significance in the cricket world. Some of them are home to Indian cricket, 'cricket's answer to the Colosseum, and the Mecca of Indian cricket. Eden Gardens has hosted the World Cup, World Twenty20, and Asia Cup.
The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium
Also known by the name Naya Raipur International Cricket Stadium, it is located in the city of Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh. This is the third-largest cricket stadium in India and the fourth-largest cricket stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 65,000 approx. The stadium came into being in 2008 and is named after a landlord from Sonakhan, Veer Narayan Singh Binjhwar, who spearheaded the 1857 Indian independence war in Chhattisgarh.
