The capital city, rich in a long history spanning over 15 centuries, has been the political center of numerous powerful empires such as Mughals, Suris, Lodis, Tughlaqs, Khaljis, Chauhans, Tomars and more. Red Fort: Originally known as Qila-i-Mubarak, the Red Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in 1648. The fort, made of red sandstone, once served as the major residence of the Mughal Dynasty for more than 200 years. The entire complex spreads over 256 acres of land which is home to several structures such as Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am, Rang Mahal, Khas Mahal, Moti Masjid etc.
Siri Fort: Built by Alauddin Khilji, Siri Fort served as the power center of the Khilji Dynasty for hundreds of years. Now in ruins, the fort complex houses a reservoir called Hauz Khas which was built to supply water to the township. Also, there's a semi-circular gateway called Alai Darwaza which is a classic example of Islamic architectural style. The fort has various intriguing stories which leave the visitors spellbound.
Purana Qila: As par the legends, Purana Qila is located at the site of Indraprastha which was the capital city of Pandavas in Mahabharata. The fort, founded by Sher Shah Suri, is home to several structures such as Shermandal, Qila-I-Kuhna Mosque etc. Also, it consists of three double-storeyed gateways named Bara Darwaza, Humayun Gate, and Talaqi Gate. The structure seems absolutely spectacular with an amalgamation of Islamic as well as Rajasthani architectural styles.
Tughlaqabad Fort: Tughlaqabad Fort, located atop a hill, is a fortified city built by Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq in 1321. As par the historians, he constructed this fort to showcase the strength of Tughlaq Dynasty across the nation. The entire area, reflecting the Islamic style of architecture, is packed with walls, domes, buildings and gateways. Unfortunately, the fort got abandoned soon after it was built.
Qila Rai Pithora: Qila Rai Pithora, also known as Rai Pithora's Fort, was originally founded by the Tomar ruler Anangpal. Later, the eminent Chauhan King Prithviraj Chauhan captured the city of Delhi and completed the construction of this structure. The fort consists of 7 gateways named Sohna, Ghazni, Ranjit, Buduan, Hauz, Rani and Maya. The area is packed with lush greenery which offers some breath of fresh air to the visitors.
Apart from these, some other popular forts in Delhi are Adilabad Fort, Lal Kot Fort, Feroz Shah Kotla Fort etc.
