Instead of celebrating Halloween on one day in a year, here’s a list of scary films that you should watch to celebrate the spirit of Halloween all year long. And the south Indian film industry has several interesting horror-thrillers over the past few years:

If you have Halloween, here’s a list of scary movies you could watch instead at home. While horror-comedies are dime-a-dozen in south Indian languages, this list has some of the most made over the past five years.

Game Over, 2019 (Tamil)

Ashwin Saravanan’s Game Over is one of the most brilliant horror/thriller to have been made in South cinema. It will bring you at the edge of your seat. Starring Taapsee in the lead, this film is a must watch.

Aval, 2017 (Tamil)

The trilingual film, starring Siddharth and Andrea in the lead, is based on a haunted house located in the mountains. The film has some well-timed scares and it will keep you hooked.

Maya, 2015 (Tamil)

The Ashwin Saravanan starrer horror/thriller, co-featuring Nayanthara in the lead, has all the elements of a perfect horror film. With several unexpected twists and turns, the well-executed jump-scares are bound to keep you interested through the run-time.

Pisaasu, 2014 (Tamil)

Mysskin’s horror film is about a young man who slowly realised that supernatural presence is taking over his life. The film got widespread appreciation upon its release and has been even remade in other languages.

Bhaagamathie, 2018 (Telugu)

Starring Anushka Shetty in the lead, Bhaagamathie is has all the troupes of a horror film like haunted bungalow, flashbacks and the soul of a woman who refuses to rest in peace. The actress shuttles between playing the gentle Chanchala and the vengeful Bhaagamathie.

Praana, 2019 (Malayalam)

Directed by VK Prakash, the film has Nithya Menon playing Thara, a writer who went on to claim that the said haunted house is not haunted. Praana will send chills down your spine with always an anticipation that something horrible is about to happen.

Athiran, 2019 (Malayalam)

Helmed by debutant director Vivek, Athiran has the suspense of a whodunit that happens in a mental health centre. The eerie wierdness of the place multiples when FahadhFaasil walks into the centre and finds Sai Pallavi in one of the cells.
