Director Rajat Kapoor is one of those behind the trend of creating alternative movies in Bollywood. He started making movies from the very beginning of the nineties. However, Rajat Kapoor initially gained fame as an actor. And after that his movies came to the notice of the audience.

Tarana

This is the first short film of Rajat Kapoor which was released in 1994. The 25:08 minute long film got two National Film Awards, one for Best Short Fiction Film and another for Best Cinematography.

Hypothesis

This was the second short film by Rajat Kapoor. This was released in 1996. Vijay Kumar and Veerendra Chauhan were cast in the film. This short film also got a National Film Award for Best Short Fiction Film that year.

Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One

This is an experimental noir written and directed by Rajat Kapoor. This murder mystery has been marked as an unique one because of the complete different approach of the character of the detective in the film. The film was released in 1997.

Raghu Romeo

It is a black comedy movie by Rajat Kapoor released in 2004. Saurav Shukla wrote the dialogues of the film and Rajat Kapoor did the screenplay by himself. Vijay Raaz, Nishikant Dixit, Sadiya Siddiqui, Maria Goretti, Saurabh Shukla and so many others were there  in the film.

Mixed Doubles

This Rajat Kapoor film, starring Ranvir Shorey, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rajat Kapoor and Koel Purie, was released in 2006. It was written by Rajat Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap, cinematographed by Rafey Mehmood.

Mithya

The film was co-written and directed by Rajat Kapoor. Naseeruddin Shah,  Neha Dhupia, Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak played vital roles in this dark film. The film was released in 2007. It was written by Saurav Shukla and cinematographed by Rafey Mehmood.

Fatso!

This film was released in 2012. The central character was played by Brijendra Kala. Ranvir Shorey, Neil Bhoopalam, Gul Panag, Gunjan Bakshi, Purab Kohli were cast in the film. The plot of this film was close to the Hollywood film Shallow Hal which was released in 2001.

In last few years, Rajat Kapoor came out like a big bang with his consequent three blockbusters-

Ankhon Dekhi in 2014, Kadakhin 2020 and RK/RKay in 2021. The film Ankhon Dekhi actually changed the notion of mainstream Indian Cinema as it earned a huge revenue which was so unexpected from such an experimental film.
