From Ghazipur to Devaraja, a look at five iconic flower markets in India

You certainly cannot miss visiting these flower markets

In India, flowers are used in festivals, rituals, celebrations, and even for medicinal purposes. In fact, India is full of flower mandis or markets, which have a rich historical background. So let’s take a look at the most famous flower markets in the country:

Mullick Ghat, Kolkata

Known to be the biggest flower market in Asia, this place attracts hundreds of visitors each day. Situated along the Hooghly River, towards the southern end of the Howrah Bridge, the MullickGhat is over 130 years old. Around thousands of vendors, each morning, gather here with their fresh stock including varieties of roses, marigolds, jasmine, lilies, hibiscus, orchids, sunflowers, etc. Do not miss taking West Bengal’s state flower harshringar and the famous togorphool to your home.

Ghazipur Flower Market, Delhi

All florists big and small around NCR flock to the Ghazipur Flower Market as it has over 50,000 kilograms of flowers being in business each day. It is one of India’s biggest flower markets and several varieties of flowers are imported and exported from here. Flowers such as protea, banksia and ilex are brought in from countries like New Zealand, the Netherlands, South Africa and Thailand. You can find a mix of local and exotic varieties, sold at wholesale rates.

K R Market and Russel Market, Bengaluru

The city has not one but two major wholesale flower markets. Check out the Avenue Road (known as the K R market), apart from visiting the Russell Market. While the former is set up in a worn-out concrete building, and has more traditional flowers like jasmine, rose, and marigold, the latter sells not just flowers but also fruits, vegetables, etc.

Devaraja Market, Mysuru

You can find varieties of Jasmine in South of India, but Mysore is known for the Queen of Flowers rather specially. The Mysore Mallige, the local variety of Jasmine, can be found in abundance at this market, which sells blossoms by the kilo and garlands by the meter. The sight here is one to behold if you like Jasmines.

Floating Market, Dal Lake

Amid the evergreen Dal Lake, how can you miss the smell and sight of the fresh fruits and flowers in its floating garden. The florists, which end up at the edge of the lake each day, are known to have the best of flowers, from dewy roses, daisies, and water lilies. If you want to witness the lotus blossoms native to the region, plan a trip to Kashmir during the summer.
