An ayurvedic herb, Giloy is used in medicinal preparations. Due to its benefits, it is often called “Amruta”, meaning nectar in Sanskrit. But like any other product, it is not short of its side effects.

Below are some of Giloy’s side effects that you should be aware of.

  1. Low levels of blood sugar
Giloy is known to control blood sugar levels and bring glucose levels down in diabetic patients. However, if giloy is consumed alongside diabetes medicines then your sugar levels can drastically drop. Therefore, consult your doctor before consuming the herb.
  1. Autoimmune disease symptoms
The main reason why people have started to consume giloy is because of its immunity-boosting properties. However, it can over-stimulate your immunity and increase its activeness. This results in the onset of symptoms of autoimmune diseases, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. Therefore, patients with autoimmune diseases should not consume giloy.
  1. Harmful for pregnant women
While there is no research to back up the claim, but experts say that giloy can be harmful to pregnant and breastfeeding women. Thus, it is recommended that you should avoid consuming even a little bit of giloy if you are pregnant.
  1. Affecting scheduled surgery
For any future surgery, your blood sugar levels need to be in control. But giloy lowers your blood sugar and should be avoided before undergoing surgery. We also suggest consulting your doctor before consuming it post-surgery.
  1. Digestive disorder
Along with the immunity booster properties, giloy is also famous for its benefits to the digestive system. However, in some people it can affect your bowel movements, resulting in constipation. Consult your doctor if you are experiencing any kind of digestive disorder because of giloy.

Giloy can be consumed in the forms of powder, tablet, or juice. It is typically recommended that, per day, adults can have 2 tablets, a glass of giloy juice, or 1-teaspoon powder. If you stick with these quantities, side effects can be avoided. However, do consult your doctor for the right amount of giloy intake for your children, as that can vary.

Also, at any time an adult or child experiences any kind of discomfort, you should stop consuming giloy and seek medical attention immediately.
