Some facts about the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue

The Statue is twice as tall as the iconic Statue of liberty.

The Statue of Unity pays homage to great freedom fighter and statesman Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It is located in the state of Gujrat, is situated on the river Narmada, facing Sardar Sarovar Dam. The project was announced in the year 2010. It was inaugurated on 31st October 2018 on the occasion of 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. Here are some of the few facts about the Statue of Unity.

1. It is the Tallest Statue in the world

It is currently the world’s tallest with a height of 182 metres or 597 ft. tall. The Statue can be seen within a seven-kilometre radius. It is twice as tall of “Statue of Liberty” in the U.S.A and five times as taller as Christ, the redeemer in Brazil.

  1. Viewing Gallery
The Statue of Unity boasts of a vast viewing gallery of 153 metres. It can accommodate up to 200 people at one go. Two high-speed elevators can take tourists to the chest of the Statue.
  1. Change of colour
It is believed that the Statue of Unity would change its colour in the next 100 years. Due to the oxidization process, the Statue will turn from bronze colour to green just like the Statue of Liberty.
  1. It’s Durability
It is built to withstand an earthquake, strong winds and flood. The Statue is resistant to winds up to the speed of 50m/sec and earthquake measuring to 6.5 on the Richter scale. The base of the structure stands strong above the highest measured flood level in area surrounding the Statue.
  1. The Ace Sculptor
Ace Sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar has designed the Statue. He studied around 2000 pictures of Sardar Patel to ensure the authenticity of the Statue’s facial features.
  1. The Loha Campaign
A Campaign called “Loha Campaign” was launched under which farming implement made of iron was collected from farmers as a symbolic contribution. This iron collected was melted and was converted into “rebar “and used for the construction of the foundation of the Statue.

The Statue of Unity has several tourist attractions such as a museum, food court, memorial garden, and a 3-star lodging facility.

The Statue of Unity is already attracting hordes of tourists and would put India on the world map in terms of the architectural marvel. Indeed, a great tribute to the original “Iron Man” who was a guiding force in the integration of united India.
