The legendary love story of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe

Their love survived through various ups and downs. It was a bond that even death could not break apart.

Often, we hearfictional love stories that make us swoon and wonder does love as that can exist? Well, there are many such stories of passion, love, and undying devotion that death also can’t tear it apart. One such famous tale of love is of Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio.

How it all started?

Norma Jean, or Marilyn Monroe, as she was popularly known as was a top actress of American cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. Joe DiMaggio, or “Yankee Clipper”, as he was popularly known,as a celebrated legendary American Baseball player. In 1952, an acquaintance set a date between two, the sparks flew. Monroe later remarked that she was expecting a flashy New York player but found DiMaggio as an introverted, reserved guy who not even once made a pass on her. Instead, he made her feel special. For DiMaggio, well, he was floored and smitten.

Marriage.

Soon after, their whirlwind romance culminated into marriage,but the marriage was doomed from the start. Marilyn was young and ambitious. Joe DiMaggio still had an old notion of the wife being at home with children. He, at times, got upset and jealous with Marilyn choice of roles and her sensual image portrayed in movies. The marriage ended within nine months.

The downfall of Marilyn.

After the divorce, Marilyn went on to date more men and even married famous playwright Arthur Miller. But Joe still considered Marilyn as his wife and didn’t commit himself to any other women. After her divorce from Miller, Marilyn suffered from addiction and depression, so much so that she was institutionalized. She was allowed just one phone call, and she called DiMaggio. He rushed and raised hell in hospital, demanding to let him take “her wife” home. Marilyn later confessed had it not been for DiMaggio, she would have killed herself.

Marilyn’s death.

The couple was again happy and were planning to remarry again when one morning, Marilyn was found dead. It is said that it was DiMaggio who arranged a small funeral for her and restricted the entry of anyone from Hollywood. He maintained that she would have been alive if it was not for them. He was seen breaking down in front of her casket, whispering, “I love you”.

DiMaggio never remarried, sent a dozen roses every week to Marilyn grave for the rest of his life. His famous last words, he would see Marilyn again!
