Tips to remove excess salt from gravy

Salt can either make a dish or break a dish!

Appropriate amount of salt is vital for making any dish edible. Too much of it can make a dish unpalatable. It is disappointing to see the food you made being wasted just because it contains an extra pinch of salt. Nothing to worry about. Below are some tricks that can help you remove the excess salt from the food, and save your effort from getting squandered.

Vinegar and sugar

Vinegar is acidic in nature, and thus a tablespoon of it can be effectively used to cut the excess salt from the dish. And to balance the sour nature of vinegar adding sugar with it will balance the flavour of the dish.

Potatoes

A few slices of potato if kept in the dish for about 15-20 minutes will absorb the extra salt from the gravy. Whenever you find your dish to be extra salty, just cut some raw potatoes into slices, wash them and add it into the gravy, it will do the rest of your job within minutes.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice can be a game saver for your salty dish. Adding some drops of lemon will add a tangy flavour to the gravy while cutting the extra salt from it.

Dough

Works the same as raw potato, adding small flour doughs into the gravy, and keeping it for 10-20 minutes can soak out the extra salt from it. About 3-4 doughs will be enough, and do not forget to remove them after the salt has been absorbed by it.

Milk

In order to neutralize the excessive salt from the gravy, half a cup of milk can be added to balance the dish. This addition will moreover give a creamy texture to the dish. Coconut milk specifically works better for the removal of extra salt.

Yogurt

Nearly 2-3 tablespoon of yogurt can save you and your dish from embarrassment in front of the guests. Yogurt is known to balance the extra salt in a food item. It will not change any flavour, rather offer a different flavour to the dish, with a tangy twist.

Flour

You might think it to be odd, but it works genius. Adding a tablespoon of flour into the gravy, will soak in the extra salt and after a few minutes, you will find the excess salt floating in the top layer over the dish. You can easily scoop that out and that’s how it can save your dish.
