Places in India, you can witness shooting stars

Because you are a star and looking up a few is fun

We all dream of sleeping under the sky and witness the magic of stars twinkling and changing in front of our eyes. Not only is it romantic it is fascinating for the sheer brilliance of nature and the universe that we get to witness. While Northern Lights and countless other places abroad offer the wide spectrum to witness the universe first hand, there are places in India that offer even a better view with the comfort of home.

Leh, Ladakh Places like the Nubra Valley and Hanle are not only scenic but also offer the stargazing experience. On the banks of the Shyok River, amid the beautiful slopes and harsh arid mountains, Nubra valley gives star gazers the perfect opportunity to be thrilled. And the best way to enjoy that is by open camping that is easily available there. Also, Hanle, situated at an altitude of 4,500 meters, houses the Indian Astronomical Observatory which is the second-highest optical telescope in the world. Why these two places are on the top of the list is because of no pollution, high altitude, and clear sky that makes the process easy.

Kutch, Gujarat The Rann of Kutch is not only the largest salt marsh in the world, but also offers the beauty of stargazing and the sky changes its face every second. Here one also gets to witness strange light phenomena, called Chir Bhatti (Ghost lights). In fact, under the clear sky of Kutch, you can also get to experience astronomy and astrophotography through the naked eye, no equipment required.

Katao, Sikkim It is more of an offbeat place for stargazing but the skies are clear, unpolluted, and the best part about this place is that it mostly low on tourists. Situated at 15000 feet above the sea level, Katao also offers camping and lets you witness the glittering astral circles that feel really close.

Coorg, Karnataka Well not just up north, the city of Coorg in Karnataka also offers the experience of stargazing and see shooting stars. The Tadiandamol peak is the major spot where one can sit, sip on coffee, and star gaze all night. Even the calm quiet jungles are perfect for a starry night.

Majkhali, Uttarakhand A small village Majkhali in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand is known for its astronomical views that one gets to witness in its clear sky.  With views of the Nanda Devi Mountain, the place is perfect for star trails and planetary photographs. There also is Kuari pass, also called the Curzon trail, known for its five rivers that offer a clear view of the Himalayas and stars.

The few other places for a starry night affair are Mandarmani in Kolkata, Shahapur in Maharashtra, Sonmarg, Shanti Stupa, PangongTso and Spiti Valley in J&K, Neil Island in Andaman and Nicobar, Taregna in Bihar, and Yercaud in Tamil Nadu.
